LIFT-AND-SLIDE

Large leaves that glide and seal.

The system for the largest openings: the leaf lifts to slide and lowers onto its seals when closed. We made it in tzalam for Graciela Iturbide’s studio.

WINDOWS AND SCREENS / LIFT-AND-SLIDE

The best of a slider, without the leaks.

In a lift-and-slide window, turning the handle makes the hardware lift the leaf a few millimeters onto its rollers so it can slide. When closed, the leaf lowers and settles onto its seals. It moves smoothly even when very heavy and, closed, seals better than a standard slider.

For Estudio Iturbide, photographer Graciela Iturbide’s studio in Mexico City designed by Taller Mauricio Rocha and Gabriela Carrillo, we made the beams and the lift-and-slide windows in tzalam. The project was published in ArchDaily.

WHEN IT FITS

For large openings and exposed façades.

  1. 01

    Large-format glazing

Leaves a standard slider could not move easily.

  2. 02

    Doors to terraces and patios

The same system works as a floor-to-ceiling door.

  3. 03

    Façades with rain and wind

When closed, the leaf settles onto its seals and better protects the interior.

  4. 04

    Cold climates or noisy streets

It closes more tightly than a standard slider.

  5. 05

    With side lights

Combined with fixed panes to resolve entire façades.

HOW WE MAKE THEM

Joinery and hardware precision.

  • Leaves in a stable wood such as tzalam, with sections that carry the weight of the glass.
  • Frame and track made with the precision the hardware requires.
  • Hardware chosen for the weight and size of each leaf.
  • Perimeter seals and drainage in the bottom track.
  • Installation and adjustment by our own team; the frame is carefully leveled on site.
  • Single, double or triple glazing, with seals around the whole leaf.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Wood lift-and-slide windows

What is a lift-and-slide window?

A sliding window or door whose hardware lifts the leaf to slide it and lowers it onto its seals when closed. It moves large, heavy leaves with little effort and seals better than a standard slider.

Wood or aluminum lift-and-slide?

Aluminum allows slimmer profiles and needs less maintenance. Wood insulates better, can be repaired and gives the opening a presence aluminum lacks, in exchange for renewing the finish from time to time. We explain it in our article on wood versus aluminum windows.

Which wood works best?

A stable wood that does not move with humidity changes, such as tzalam or macuil. For Estudio Iturbide we used tzalam.

Can it have double or triple glazing?

Yes. We design the leaf section for single, double or triple glazing; double and triple glazing insulate from cold, heat and noise and reduce condensation.

YOUR WINDOWS

Is there large glazing in your project?

Send us the window drawings or the opening size, the site location and the date. We’ll tell you whether lift-and-slide fits and give you a ballpark.
